Volunteer Code of Conduct

As volunteers of Gaza Food Project (GFP), we are part of a global, community-led movement supporting kitchens and mutual-aid initiatives across Gaza. Our work is rooted in solidarity, dignity, transparency, and collective responsibility.

This Code of Conduct sets out the values, expectations, and responsibilities that guide everyone in the Gaza Food Project volunteer network. By joining GFP as an activist or volunteer, you agree to uphold these principles in all your work on behalf of the project.

1. Our Mission & Shared Values

As a volunteer, you are an ambassador for this mission. We ask that you always act in ways that reflect: 

• Direct solidarity and compassion toward Palestinian communities — we are activists taking action, not a charity
• Trust and partnership with local organizers, recognizing they know their communities best
• Honesty, transparency, and accountability in all activities — ensuring resources reach the people they are meant for
• Respect for fellow volunteers, partners, and the communities we serve, embracing our diverse, volunteer-led network
• Sustained commitment to long-term organizing, showing up consistently rather than only in moments of crisis
• Care for the safety and security of all network members

 2. Respectful & Inclusive Conduct

Gaza Food Project brings together volunteers from many countries, backgrounds, and experiences. We are committed to maintaining a welcoming environment for everyone.

• Treat all volunteers, staff, partners, and community members with dignity and respect
• Listen actively and make space for diverse perspectives and approaches
• Use inclusive, affirming language in all communications
• Respect cultural, religious, and political differences within our network, provided this does not conflict with our fundamental mission or our core commitment to humanitarian principles. 
• Acknowledge mistakes and be open to feedback and learning

3. Confidentiality & Digital Security

Given the nature of our work, maintaining confidentiality and digital security is critical, both to protect our volunteers globally and to safeguard the communities we support in Gaza.

• Do not share the personal information of volunteers, partners, or beneficiaries without explicit consent
• Use secure, approved channels (e.g. WhatsApp groups, designated email addresses) for sensitive communications
• Do not publicly disclose internal project information, financials, or operational details unless explicitly authorized
• Be mindful of digital surveillance risks; exercise caution about what you share, where, and with whom
• If you become aware of a security concern, report it immediately to a project lead.

4. Accuracy & Responsible Messaging

As a GFP activist, your communications, on social media, in person, and in print, represent the project to the public. Responsible messaging protects both the project's integrity and the communities we serve.

• Only share verified information from GFP's approved channels and materials
• Do not make claims or statements on behalf of GFP without authorization
• Use official design templates and messaging guidelines as provided by the Communications team
• Correct misinformation promptly if you have shared something inaccurate; notify the Communications team
• Clearly distinguish your personal views from official GFP positions when posting publicly

5. Financial Integrity

Trust and transparency are central to how the Gaza Food Project operates. Volunteers involved in fundraising, cash transfers, or financial processes must adhere to the highest standards of integrity.

• Handle all funds in accordance with GFP's Funding Policy
• Never use GFP funds, resources, or the GFP name for personal gain
• Keep accurate and transparent records of all financial activities you are involved in
• Declare any conflicts of interest to project leadership immediately
• Report any suspected financial misconduct or irregularities to project admins

6. Commitment & Reliability

GFP runs on the dedication of its volunteers. While we understand that everyone has limits, we ask you to be realistic about your availability and communicate proactively.

• Only take on tasks and responsibilities you can realistically fulfill
• Meet agreed deadlines or communicate in advance if you are unable to do so
• Attend coordination meetings when possible, or notify the group if you cannot
• Hand over tasks or materials responsibly if you need to step back from a role
• Take care of your own wellbeing, sustainable activism is better for everyone

 7. Resolving Conflicts

Disagreements can arise in any community. We ask all volunteers to approach conflict with good faith and a spirit of repair.

• Address interpersonal concerns directly and respectfully where it is safe to do so
• If direct resolution is not possible, bring concerns to a team lead
• Do not air internal disagreements or conflicts in public channels or on social media
• All parties in a conflict will be heard; resolutions will be sought collaboratively where possible

8. Violations & Accountability

Volunteers who breach this Code of Conduct may face the following actions, depending on the severity and context of the violation:

1. Informal conversation and request to correct behavior
2. Formal written warning
3. Temporary suspension from GFP activities
4. Permanent removal from the GFP volunteer network

 9. Reporting a Concern

If you experience or witness a violation of this Code of Conduct, you are encouraged to report it. All reports will be handled with discretion and care.
